The CHEK Team

Superintendent and Principal: Dr. Bill Wilson

Dr. Wilson is a BC certified teacher and is the founding educator of the Nelson Christian Community School and Christian Home Education in the Kootenays and Across BC. He received his PhD from the University of Alberta. As a historian, he has done extensive research on education in Canada. Devoting his life to the encouraging and supporting of Christian education, Dr. Wilson brings years of experience to CHEK as a teacher, Principal and Superintendent in Christian schools. Bill and his late wife Ruth raised four sons. He has nine granddaughters and two grandsons.


Associate Director of Administration: Linda Schmidt

Linda is our behind-the-scenes point person. She orchestrates everything to do with the CHEK office. She is passionate about Christian Education and is a great resource for anyone who may have questions about schooling at home or our program. Linda holds a BC teaching certificate as a specialist teacher in Foods and Nutrition. Linda lives in Nelson with her husband and three teenagers and enjoys walking, running or biking in the area.


Director of Educational Services/ Nelson Teacher: Dawn Snell

Dawn is a certified teacher and has homeschooled her children from the beginning of their schooling careers. She enjoys the flexibility and freedom to teach according to each child’s individual needs. Dawn has a teaching background in Primary to Junior High classrooms, as well as a music degree. She serves part time as CHEK's Director of Educational Services and highschool graduation counsellor. She is excited to be able to combine her love of teaching with supporting home school families in the CHEK program. Dawn lives in Nelson, BC with her husband and five children.


Director of Special Education: Terry Zimmer

Terry has been involved in Christian Education for many years, starting with her time spent at Trinity Western University. She has done graduate work in Special Education and serves students across the Province. She is a specialist in Special Education at Kootenay Christian Academy in Cranbrook where she has also been blessed to educate her 3 boys. She believes God’s call on her life is to help children with diverse learning needs to participate in the joy of learning, and to develop the talents that the Lord has given them. She is delighted to be able to extend her services to the Christian home-school community. She serves the students in CHEK from her Cranbrook office.


Cranbrook Teacher: Darren Stoltz

Darren is a happy husband of 10 years, with three gorgeous daughters who are being homeschooled on a hobby farm in the West Kootenays. He is a certified teacher with training in Math, Theatre, and English. Over his 14 year teaching career, most of which was at Heritage Christian School in Kelowna, his passion for education based on God given truth first and foremost has grown and deepened. Darren has come to the same conclusion that Dr. Raymond Moore did in 1981, that "in general, the best teacher or care-giver cannot match a parent of even ordinary education and experience (Home Grown Kids)". He is proud to be a colleague working alongside some incredible teachers and parents who believe this about their children's education as well, and who are pursuing passionately this adventurous call of our heavenly Father in their lives.


High School Science Teacher: Henderson Tran

Henderson is a certified teacher who teaches Science and Math. He has completed an M. Ed. degree where he focused on researching ways for families to raise and educate their children most effectively in partnership with educational organizations. He believes that parents play the most crucial role in their children’s development and educational success. He is proud to work with CHEK in helping families fulfill their educational goals. Henderson resides in Surrey with his wife and three boys.


Grand Forks Teacher: Jocelyne Bowman

Jocelyne is a certified teacher living in Grand Forks with her husband and eight of her nine children. She graduated from the University of Alberta at Campus St. Jean where she took her teacher training wholly in the French language. She is passionate about children and home schooling. Well loved by the families she teaches and the staff she works with, Jocelyn sets a great example on what homeschooling can be.


Grand Forks Teacher: Vicky Krahn

Vicky is a BC certified teacher who lives in Grand Forks along with her husband who is the Executive Director of Pines Bible Camp. They have 3 young boys who bring much excitement and laughter to their household. Vicky has enjoyed over 14 years experience as a Teacher On Call working all grades. She has juggled this alongside running the Outdoor Education Program at Pines Bible Camp, which has filled a lifelong dream as it is her passion to make learning practical, hands on and fun. Based on her own schooling experience, and belief in the value of Christian education, she is very excited about being a part of the CHEK team.


Lower Mainland Teacher: Sandra Griffith

Sandra Griffith has been a teacher in Christian School settings for over 15 years. She is very excited about working in the Lower Mainland with parents and children who are committed to schooling at home. She knew the benefits that this type of schooling has to offer, but is now seeing first-hand all the blessings that come along with it. Sandra is married to John and has three children still at home: two older step daughters and a 2 year old son who loves having his Mommy at home. Sandra resides in Abbotsford.


Prince George/ Quesnel Teacher: Stacy DeVries

Stacy is the contact teacher for the Prince George and Quesnel area. She has thoroughly enjoyed schooling her own two children at home. Stacy is a BC certified teacher and has had many years of experience teaching a variety of grades and subjects, specializing in Language Arts. Stacy resides in Nelson.

 

West Kootenay Teacher: Carla Wilson 

  Carla is a contact teacher for the West Kootenay area. She specializes in the teaching of second languages including: French, German, and Spanish. Carla lives in Nelson.

 

 

Island Teacher: Heidi Berg


  Heidi is a BC certified teacher specializing in high school Social Studies. She

graduated from the University of Victoria and has several years experience working in Christian school settings. She feels fortunate to be working with such talented educators who are all committed to providing quality education using the Bible as a moral compass. Heidi lives in Victoria with her wonderful husband and son.



Library/ Resource Distribution: Dale Olson

Dale enjoys being a part of the CHEK Across BC team. She is passionate about books and learning. Dale has developed our library and distributes material across BC to students. She also lives in the area with her husband and is blessed with a son, a daughter and 2 grandchildren. Dale resides in Nelson.


Resource Manager: Jane Di Ruscio

Jane organizes and processes all the ordering for CHEK. She works full-time in the CHEK office to help meet the resource needs of teachers and families. She lives in Nelson with her husband and daughter.




Receptionist/ Data Management: Colleen Smienk

Colleen enjoys being a part of the CHEK Across BC team. Besides answering the phone, she organizes incoming and outgoing data and the student files. Colleen and her husband live near Balfour where they raised their 3 children. They are blessed with 7 grandchildren.



Accounting: Marcia Gustafson

Marcia Gustafson handles the finances for CHEK and rounds outs the CHEK team. She recently moved to Nelson with her husband and two children.



CHEK is operated by the Nelson Christian School Society and is dedicated to the advancement of Christian Education.
